Whole wheat tortilla wraps are now one of my favourite quick and easy bread alternative.  I have never really been a fan of buying packaged food and as we like to eat a tortilla or two for dinner from time to time I thought it would be a nice idea to make our own.

The first few times I made them it took quite a while to get the tortilla’s rolled to the right size and get the system down.  However, once you get into the routine of rolling them out, placing them in the skillet and then rolling the next one out…..the process started to move along quite quickly.

Futhermore, what I also love about this recipe is you get a lot of wraps.  Once they are cooked you can place them in a zip lock bag and wait for them to cool.  Then you can leave them in the fridge or alternatively you can freeze them for another time.

Total Time: 90 Min

Prep Time: 60 Mins

Cooking Time: 30 Mins

INGREDIENTS – Makes 34 servings

  • 4 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 5 cups boiling water

  1. Put flour, salt and baking powder into a bowl and mix. Pour water over this and mix thouroughly until it becomes dough. Need dough on a flat surface for a while and then shape into 30 balls and leave to rest for 20 mins.
  2. Heat a cast-iron griddle or a non-stick pan to a medium heat.
  3. Roll out onto an unflavoured, un-greased counter top. Roll as thin as you can and stretch the dough when you pick it up to place it on the griddle.
  4. Cook on both sides, slip the hot tortilla into a zip-lock back and zip it up. Keep doing this. The trapped steam keeps the tortillas soft. If you want to freeze these, let the bag cool then place in the freezer.
